Britta Phillips

Britta Phillips

September 2011

The VLP is pleased to announce

that Britta Phillips has been

selected as our Outstanding Law

Student Volunteer for the month

of September 2011.  Britta is

entering her second year at the

U of A and participated in the

VLP’s Bankruptcy Reaffirmation

clinic over the summer.  Britta

was fearless as a volunteer.

She jumped right into things

during the clinic and never

hesitated when it came to

appearing in court.  Britta did

a great job of going back and

forth with the judges to make sure all the details of the case were clearly laid

out.  She displayed poise and confidence in every aspect of the clinic.  VLP

staff count themselves fortunate to have been able to work with this impressive

young woman.

Britta is a California girl, born and raised in Laguna Niguel, CA.  She attended

the University of Arizona as an undergrad and majored in both Business

Administration and Entrepreneurship and minored in Pre-Law.  She graduated

with a B.S. in Business Administration in May 2010.  Britta loved her

undergrad experience as a Wildcat so much that she decided to stay here

for law school.  She’s glad she did because she really likes the atmosphere,

classes and professors at the College of Law.  One professor in particular,

Professor Melissa Meister, has become Britta’s favorite “because of the one-

on-one help she gave to each student.”

Britta decided to get involved with the VLP because she wanted “to become

involved in the Tucson community and gain a great legal experience.  Britta

says, “Since I’ve been a law student, I have learned how complex the legal

system is and also how helpful the legal community is.”  We asked Britta

what the most important thing she has learned during her first year of law

school.  She replied, “The most important things I’ve learned so far are how

to present cases to a judge in an organized way and how to form

relationships with clients.”  Two skills that will serve her well in the future.

Like any true California girl, Britta loves to be outdoors.  She loves snow-

boarding, swimming, traveling, hiking and going to U of A football games.

When she has enough time though she loves to head back home and hit

the Laguna Niguel beach – a place she still refers to as home.  But over

the past few years she’s developed some decidedly Arizona habits.  She’s

become a big Diamondbacks fan and finds herself turning on the game when

she needs a break from studying.  She also loves to eat at Zinburger on River

Road.  Once she’s through with law school, her dream is to open her own

practice, possibly back home in Laguna Niguel.  Being your own boss and

living by the beach – that’s probably a dream Britta shares with quite a few

people.
